The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1983 to protect the endangered manatee. Made up of nine islands totaling about 19 hectares (46 acres), the refuge provides critical winter habitat for about 300 manatees. The refuge is accessible only by boat, but many boat rentals, charters and guided tours operate out of the small town of Crystal River, about 10 km (6 miles) north of Homosassa Springs. The best time to see manatees is January to March, especially just after a cold front. Avoid weekends, and, if you are in your own boat PLEASE observe speed zones and sanctuary restrictions.
