This Asian deciduous tree was introduced to South Carolina and Georgia in about 1830, and has since spread south through Florida. It grows in disturbed areas, along highways and fencerows. The showy lilac and dark purple flowers appear in March and April. The yellow-green fruit are poisonous to humans.
