Pilot whales have a long, black body, measuring 4-6 m (13-20 ft), with a bulbous, globe-like head. Males are somewhat larger than females. They are gregarious, often seen in groups of 15 to 50 or more. Group strandings occasionally occur on Florida beaches. These whales are usually found in deeper water, but sometimes forage close to the shoreline.
