Caladesi Island State Park. Tel: (813) 469-5918
Accessible only by public ferry, this 475-hectare (1170 acre) park consists of six undeveloped Gulf Coast Barrier Islands, with beautiful beaches and great swimming and shelling. In 2006 this beach was ranked second best beach in the United States by "Dr Beach".
Bottlenose dolphins are often seen offshore, and Loggerhead turtles nest on the beach. This is a great place to follow raccoon and gopher tortoise tracks in the sand – you can often follow what appears to be a raccoon’s entire night’s ramblings. The ferry leaves hourly from Honeymoon Island State Park. For ferry information call (727) 734-5263.
