Giant Gulf Coast sturgeons are jumping again in Florida’s Suwannee and Appalachicola Rivers. These huge, armored fish can grow to the size of a person – some are eight feet long and weigh as much as 200 pounds.
Sturgeons spend the winter in the Gulf of Mexico and return to the rivers in spring and summer. Problems arise when boats and jet skis speed along the river where the sturgeons are jumping. Nine people were injured in collisions with sturgeon during 2007. This year, new signs warn boaters to slow down.
