Camping

Whether you enjoy camping in Florida depends on the time of year, and your tolerance for heat and insects. For us, fall, winter and spring are great times to camp – the biting insects are not as bad as they are in the summer and the heat is not as overwhelming.

When it comes to tent camping, renting a spot for an RV or renting a cabin, Florida’s State Parks are one of the States best kept secrets. The online Park Guide will help you find out which State Parks have rental cabins, RV camping, full facility camping (which includes water, electricity and a picnic table) or primitive camping. You can check availability and make a reservation through ‘Reserve America’ link at the park web site. Remember, prime time space at the more popular parks fills up quickly, for example, you may have to make reservations 11 months in advance for the cabins at Bahia Honda. See the links below for some suggestions for great places to camp.

If you are flying into Florida and cannot bring your camping equipment it may still be possible to camp. It is difficult to find a place to rent tents and other camping gear but you can buy a decent tent at many chain stores such as Target and Wal-Mart for less than $100, and other camping equipment such as bedding and a small camping stove can be purchased in the same stores very inexpensively. For not much more than the price of a single night in a hotel, two people can equip themselves with the basics, and camp in some of Florida’s finest natural areas. When you leave you can always donate your used camping equipment to deserving charities such as Goodwill or The Salvation Army , both organizations have collection centers all over the state.

Alternatively, you can rent an RV, Cruise AmericaCoastal RV rental, Adventure touring and El Monte RV are some of the companies that rent RV’s in Florida.
